Open Briefing is a mission-driven nonprofit working alongside grassroots activists, community groups, and social movements at risk around the world. Working together, we strengthen their physical security, digital resilience, and collective wellbeing. The need for Open Briefing’s work has never been greater. At least 300 human rights defenders and 91 journalists were killed in 2024, and demand for our services has increased 66% over the last two years.
To meet this need and fight back against growing threats, we are excited to be launching our first-ever development board – and we need you!
The purpose
Across the world, authoritarianism is on the rise, civic space is shrinking, and foreign aid is being slashed. These are challenging times, but we are facing them head-on, and our first ever development board will be a key piece of our response.
If you are watching events around the world unfold and eager to play your part in protecting people and planet, but feeling powerless and don’t know where to start, this is the opportunity for you. This is your chance to support an impactful organisation that ensures communities can thrive and continue their vital work challenging power.
To meet the ever-increasing demand for our services, we are focussing on being fundable and findable. We need a step change in our fundraising, communications, and creativity. The board will play a crucial role in helping us build relationships, raise our profile, design bold communication strategies, and strengthen our income generation.

We are looking for five people to join a dynamic, passionate, and action-orientated development board.
- Are you passionate about bringing your skills, expertise, and networks to a dynamic global nonprofit?
- Do you have bold ideas to make Open Briefing fundable and findable? Are you excited for the chance to translate those ideas into action?
- Are you looking for an opportunity to use your skills, creativity, expertise, voice, and connections in a way that will directly power our fundraising and communications work
- Are you excited about working with us to protect people and communities on the frontlines of the fight against social injustice, authoritarianism, and the climate crisis?
- You don’t need to have sat on a board before, you just need to bring energy, enthusiasm, and expertise.
We are particularly interested in people with experience from the following industries:
- Design, media, communications, and creative
- Technology
- Venture capital and impact investment
- Strategy consultancy
- Philanthropy, fundraising events, and giving circles.
