Resources and support to stay safe around COP29

With COP29 taking place in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku from 11 to 22 November 2024, it is vital for climate activists and environmental defenders to know that there are resources and support available from allies across the globe to help them stay safe before, during, and after the conference.

Attendees at COP should be aware not only of restrictions on civic space and fundamental freedoms surrounding the event, but also the risk of surveillance or reprisals from corporations or governments opposed to your work at COP or upon your return home.

COP Safety Hub

This year, Open Briefing is again participating in the COP Safety Hub, a joint initiative of organisations and specialists experienced in managing various types of risk. The Hub offers an accessible channel through which activists and advocates can receive in-person and remote support in the event of a security incident or concern during the conference or on returning home.

During the conference, activists at risk can request support from the Safety Hub Hotline on +49 157 326 028 66 (Signal or WhatsApp) or by emailing [email protected].

Further information on staying safe around the conference is also available on the COP Safety Hub website. There are additional strategies to increase your physical and digital security and support your wellbeing around COP29 in our Holistic Security Protocol for Human Rights Defenders.

Ongoing support from Open Briefing

Open Briefing works in partnership with climate activists and environmental defenders at risk of physical, digital, and psychological harm. We support individuals, organisations, communities, and movements. We strengthen your defences, help you navigate turbulence, and restore your resilience.

On returning home, it is particularly important to reflect on how your participation at COP may have increased your risk. In some instances, it may be necessary to review your security measures and consider additional steps.

If you believe a credible threat exists, fully-funded support is available from our global team. You can request holistic security support through our rapid response mechanism using our secure form. Foundations and nonprofits can also refer grassroots partners through the same mechanism.

Your safety and wellbeing are paramount as you work for climate action. Together, we can ensure that your voice is not silenced at COP29 or beyond.
