Open Briefing is honoured to announce that we have become a voting member of CIVICUS. This global alliance of civil society organisations and activists is dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society throughout the world.
CIVICUS connects a diversity of members and partners dedicated to defending civic freedoms and democratic values; strengthening the power of people to organise, mobilise and take action within and across borders; and empowering a more accountable, effective and innovative civil society. Headquartered in South Africa, CIVICUS is a growing community of over 8,000 members from more than 175 countries, with a strong presence in the global south.
As a voting member, we will input into the alliance’s strategic priorities and play a leadership role in key activities, such as convening events, steering campaigns and co-designing programme initiatives. Specifically, we will be contributing to:
- International Civil Society Week 2020
- Innovation for Change online platform
- CIVICUS Monitor research tool
Open Briefing and CIVICUS share a belief that when we join forces in our diversity, we build meaningful momentum to tackle the challenges humanity faces.
Our membership of CIVICUS is part of our growing strategic efforts to protect the civic space and defend civil society, so that our work with threatened civil society organisations and activists will be more than just a ‘sticking plaster’. For example, we have recently participated in the Defenders in Development campaign coordinated by the Coalition for Human Rights in Development, the #StandTogetherNow campaign coordinated by Action for Sustainable Development, and the #AtWhatCost campaign coordinated by the European Interagency Security Forum.
We now look forward to working with the CIVICUS alliance and our fellow members around the world.
