Open Briefing has published the first in a new fortnightly series, The View from Russia.
In each edition, Open Briefing’s Russian-speaking researcher, Erin Decker, will look at how major events and issues are reported in the Russian media. She will analyse the reporting from four major Russian sources: RT is a television network and news website funded by the Russian government; Nezavisimaya Gazeta is a privately owned newspaper that is generally regarded as pro-opposition; Kommersant is an independent daily newspaper; the Moscow Times is an English-language newspaper that provides a foreign perspective. In the first edition, Erin examines the coverage of the recent protests in Ukraine that led to the eventual removal of the President Viktor Yanukovych.
The View from Russia is the first of several planned ‘The View from…’ series, which will allow Western audiences to explore the reporting of major events from various non-Western perspectives.
This development means Open Briefing will now be publishing weekly political and security risk updates, fortnightly Russian media reviews, and a forthcoming monthly briefing on remote-control warfare, as well as our usual trademark intelligence briefs and policy briefing papers and articles. All from a hard working team of volunteers!
